Also the install on Vista x64 SP3 is broken in the presence of Account Control ON which is the normal case for Vista. It gives an error as indicated in the following picture:

Update: Fixed in a new release of the Exporter. A working version of the scene is here.

Fails in Firefox 3.0.12 and 3.5.2. Website reported as a failed site.

Using Max 2009 on Vista x86, SP1, I created and exported a simple scene with a knot, 3 lights and a camera.

Here is the scene on this website.

The model does not play in Firefox 3.0.13, either from the file system or from this website.

It does play in MS IE 8 both from the file system or from the website.

The samples on the hypercosm website play in both MSIE 8 and Firefox 3.

Careful where you download a file with your browser. When the virus scanner kicks in it can take forever on a network drive.

Scanning

Like many of us, I use Firefox. After a file is downloaded, the virus scanner is called, in this case AVG Free, to scan the download for any nasty free loaders. This only take a couple of seconds on a local hard drive, but if you point your download to a network drive, in this case so that I can play my podcast using a media client – my PS3 actually – the virus scanner will take many times longer, perhaps a couple of minutes rather than a couple of seconds.

Not sure why that should be, but it is. So don’t point your downloads to a network drive.

I’m planning a short vacation. So the obvious thing to do is to use Google Maps to plan the trip. After putting in some way points, I got to a ferry, and Google croaked… I’ve got some screen shots that show the problems and I’ve got some suggestions about features that are missing.

Audacity has a bug when copy/paste is used on a segment of audio in a track.

Audacity 1.2.6
Vista x86 SP1

Audacity_Copy_Paste_Bug

click for full size image.

To reproduce the problem:

  1. Record a segment of audio.
  2. Select a portion of the audio and
  3. point to a point beyond the audio recording on the same track and
  4. paste. Observe that the pasted audio is tacked to the end of the recording, not at the paste point.
  5. Select the Envelope tool.
  6. Observe that Envelope handles for the pasted audio are displayed beyond the audio data.

I have tried to reproduce this outside of this test project and was not able to reproduce the problem. However, the picture above indicates that this problem does exist for some series of steps.

I suggest that the audio paste should have occurred at the mouse position rather than at the end. This would require adding a segment of silence to the file.

Also, I’m not sure how one can move a segment of audio along a track without moving the entire track. For example, if the alignment of the pasted audio needed to be adjusted, then I’m not sure how this could be done. The Time Shift tool apparently moves the entire track, not just the selection. I’ll check the documentation.

In release 4.6.16 of 2Moons, the mail interface is broken. The Send and Cancel buttons no longer appear, so it is not possible to send mail. This occurs in Parca Temple, and in Braiken Castle. As far as I know all characters and all servers show this problem.

Folks keep saying that it works, but it does not work for any of my characters on any of the servers that I have tried.

If you look at the interface casually it appears ok, but if you actually try to send mail, you can’t.

The Mail Interface Previously Looked like this:

Notice the SEND and CANCEL buttons at the bottom of the left mail window.

Here is the new interface as of 4.6.16.

Notice that absence of the SEND and CANCEL buttons in the left window.

It would seem that the mail interface is being removed. And this version allows mail messages to be retrieved for the 29 or fewer days that mail messages are being held until they expire.

I never saw an announcment or rational for why mail is being removed.

If mail does not look this way for you, then take a screen shot and show me your interface.

Some research on SysInterals.com has turned up XPerf, a performance tool written by Microsoft.

This tool records a number of kernel mode activities and then allows analysis in detail, esp of interrupts and Deferred Procedure Calls.

Using XPerf on the ailing laptop has shown that the culprit is acpi.sys.

OpenOffice Base 2.4 running on Vista Ultimate [x86 or x64].

Dynamic reports fail with the data not matching the column headers. Static reports work.

Update: This is a known problem. The problem is that the name TITLE doesn’t work as a report column. This means that no column of a database table can be named TITLE if dynamic tables are used.

When building a database of my DVD collection which includes BLOB images of png images of the covers, the database can be backed up, but it cannot be restored. This of course makes the backups useless. The images are 475×475 pixel PNG images.

UPDATE: Problem solved. Parameter max_allowed_packet is the packet size for requests. This defaults to 1M and needs to be larger to allow this restore to work. Setting the max_allowed_packet parameter to 10M allowed the restore to complete successfully.

I just got a new Alienware m15x. Great machine. Very nice design. But I’m running into a couple of problems.

Update: 8 June 2008 9pm- I spoke too soon. The problem is back in spades. See section later in this post regarding use of SysInternals Process Explorer with more data on the problem.

Update: 8 June 2008 - The CPU Busy problem is not occurring for about the past 2 hours. The system was idle – but with the CPU busy for several hours today. There appears to be no reason for this change. It bears watching.

Update: 7 June 2008 – New information added on CPU Busy.

On 6 April 2008, this site, when it was on another hosting service, was attacked and an <iFrame tag appended to every php and html file on the site. The <iFrame tag pointed back to the following domains:

cdpuvbhfzz(dot)com
ccfelomvhk(dot)com

The attack was apparently perpetrated because two php.ini parameters were left that allow exploits:
allow_url_fopen = on
register_globals = on

These settings have now been changed to OFF.

PS3
The PS3 is probably the best, and reasonably priced, Blu-Ray player on the market. Now that the HD format wars are over, it was time to get a Blu-Ray player

All the Windows hype about the “Media Editions” of Windows was never very clear. Apparently the Media Edition contains the features necessary to serve various files to the other entertainment systems in the home. Music and video players can play files from your desktop harddrive via these servers. Now with a new PS3, Media Services is becoming more useful. It will be interesting to play photos and videos from a server. The PS3 only has a 40GB harddrive and the file management features of the PS3 are very primitive.

Vista requires signed drivers. I found out the hard way a few weeks ago when I installed a demo version of Corel Photo Album 6 that ignoring this error can be very troublesome. I have found out the hard way that you must uninstall any programs that install unsigned drivers before you reboot. Vista refuses to boot when there is an unsigned driver. Recovery requires that you boot with the recovery disk and then do a system repair. This is a very nasty and time consuming fix. You can use a System Recovery after the uninstall, but do not reboot before you attempt this.

I used QVCS a while ago and need source control again, so I’m a returning user.

I’ve got the latest trial [3.10.15], running on Vista x64, quad processor, 4GB memory and 500GB HD.

I created a simple project, no problems in creating the project. But when I check it out I get an error on SUO file.

I’m not sure if I need to source control this file or not, but that shouldn’t be a problem if I do, as far as I know.

UPDATE:
SUO files don’t need to be checked in. The problem appears to be that the SUO file is “hidden” in Windows. Problem solved.

QAvimator 2007-04-17 based on About dialog.

shows this:

The same animation in poser looks ok.
Couple Shower in Poser

Here is the BVH file created by Poser. Couple Shower Male
This file works fine when loaded into SL so it is a valid BVH file. Looks like a problem with QAvimator. These animations were made using IK for all limbs. Perhaps QAvimator cannot deal with a file made in this way.

I’ve installed video and dvd support as discussed in this article in PCTech101.
At this point I’ve installed RPMs from the OpenSuse repository. http://software.opensuse.org/download/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.1/

I had to install these rpms manually. YAST refresh of the site would never complete and it would then produce errors that the available RPM could not be found on the site. I downloaded them from the site and then installed them using rpm -Uhv.

These are the components that I have installed in the KDE mm suite. [click for larger image].
KDEMM components installed

When I use any of the video players: Totum, Kaffein, Xine – the audio plays, but there is no video. Is there something else that I need? I get a black screen. No errors. The configuration for Kaffein indicated no errors.

Thanks,
ww
